Persepolis essay
November 7, 2013
I’m writing to support, and defend the rights we, as students have to read graphic novels, like
Persepolis. Thinking of banning this book is repugnant. This book may be a graphic in more than one
Way, but the content may seem crass, but let me ask you this, is what we see in the book worse than
What were exposed to with social media the fallowing are examples: twitter, Instagram, Facebook,
Tumbler, Myspace just to name a few. This book maybe setup like a comic book, but for this generation
That is used to visual stuff on their phones that’s a good thing it keeps are attention longer and has us
Actually enjoying a book for once, me being a student that doesn't read very much outside of class I find
Reading graphic novels are a way to change things up and show youth that reading isn't all just words
On a page that there is more to it and that it is boring but it can be fun and interesting and be something
They can enjoy.
Persepolis teaches valuable life lessons, when you see the life choices Marji, had made that directed
Her down a pathway of destruction students can learn from her mistakes and begin to see there are
Better life choice one can make. So I ask you is better that we learn from her mistakes and avoid making
Thoughts choice or should be uninformed and make them are self?
This book is a gate way for students to start getting into reading, explore different types of ligature
, it show students that reading doesn't have to be just all words and no visuals, it breaks down the
Dreaded thought of having to read words by supplying the student with something that draws their
Attention and like I stated early this generation is visual, so by providing something new to the youth
That breaks down the walls of the stereotypes we have on reading book you prolonging the students
Desire for something visual and starting a renewed interest in reading.
So for my ending question Do you thing banning books like Persepolis is beneficial to a student, who
Lacks a hunger for reading in today’s visual society?
Thank you for you time to read this
Sincerely,
Mario D. Soto
